The trouble with protein shakes is they usually taste pretty bad when you just mix the protein powder with water.
This is the most basic way to have them, but also tastes the worst.
Yes, it does depend on the protein powder you use, but, as a general rule, protein powder by itself tastes pretty bad.
That’s where protein smoothies come in!
And, man, does this strawberry chocolate protein shake come in to its own as a way to get your protein fix in!
Or should I say, chocolate strawberry protein smoothie?!
I know after having had this strawberry chocolate protein shake, I can no longer go back to having regular strawberry protein shakes.
Why this strawberry chocolate protein shake is amazing
It tastes like a Strawberry chocolate smoothie
I don’t know about you, but I find the texture of protein shakes to be pretty bad.
It’s not water, it’s not a smoothie. It’s just… all kinds of wrong! Not with this strawberry chocolate smoothie.
By adding real strawberries, yogurt and almonds, you end up with a smoothie texture instead of a slightly-thicker-than-water texture.
We all know that chocolate and strawberries go well together.
By using chocolate protein powder with the fresh strawberries, you can replicate this awesome combination.
This is kind of like having a chocolate covered strawberry protein shake!
This strawberry protein shake is full of good nutrients and protein
This is not just a protein shake with strawberries.
By adding the almonds and yogurt, we also get a chunk of healthy fats, added protein, and cultures that we would miss out on by just having a regular strawberry protein shake.
This is a high protein drink that delivers other key nutrients, too.
Great!
This is a Keto-friendly strawberry protein smoothie
Coming in at 14.3g of net carbs, this is a Keto-friendly chocolate strawberry protein smoothie.
Some may consider this a little on the high end, but I personally find it easy enough to still stay under 25g of net carbs per day when having this, and it’s definitely easy if you are going closer to the 50g limit some stick to.
If you find it a little high, try reducing the strawberries slightly.
Also be sure to use a low-carb protein powder. I personally use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey protein.
This is pretty low carb, but I am sure there are even lower carb protein powders out there.
I use this because the chocolate flavor is one of the better ones out there.
Things to look out for and swaps
The quality of the chocolate flavor from your protein powder will greatly affect the final taste of this chocolate strawberry protein shake.
As mentioned above, I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey protein powder – the double rich chocolate option.
Be sure to blend the almonds first, until they turn in to a powder.
This is because they can be hard to blend in to a smoothie if you add them after other ingredients.
The same goes for the strawberries – if you use frozen ones, blend them with or after the almonds before adding the remaining ingredients.
Supplements you can add to your chocolate strawberry protein shake
Given this chocolate strawberry protein shake already has a supplement in the form of protein powder in it, why not go ahead and add some more to it if you so desire?
If you need to keep your fiber up, try adding Psyllium Husks.
They don’t affect the flavor, and blend in very easily.
If you like a bit of a tang, you could add some Vitamin C to include the health benefits that come with it.
Strawberry chocolate protein shake recipe
Ingredients you will need
- Frozen or fresh strawberries (you may want to add ice if you want it colder and don’t use frozen strawberries)
- Low fat natural yogurt (substitute for Vegan-friendly yogurt if needed for your diet)
- Chocolate protein powder
- Almonds
- Stevia
- Water
- Any supplements you want to add (optional)
Steps
Prepare the ingredients.
Blend the almonds in to a powder to help them mix in to the smoothie better.
If using frozen strawberries, blend them up as much as you can in to a kind of powder, otherwise it can be hard for them to break up when you blend.
Add the remaining ingredients.
Add any supplements you like.
Add the water (to your preference. I used 250ml / 1 cup in this recipe. The less you add, the thicker it will be.).
Blend.
